Natural unrefined sugar

This past week I was able to make a trip to the Mennonite Store (Coblentz Bulk Foods) by my parents home to stock up on some baking supplies.  My eye was caught by a bag of unrefined natural sugar so I purchased a bag and I have been using it. I LOVE IT!  A LOT!  I made molasses cookies this week and they were beautiful rolled in it.  So I decided to do a little research on raw sugar and I was amazed that there are minerals and beneficial nutrients in raw sugar and NONE in our refined sugar from the store, infact there are added chemicals. It was alarming. So something that intrigued me is now something I want to get instead of the regular sugar in stores, makes me feel better!!! I am including a link to a blog that has a wonderful article on this. Click on Natural Organic Lifestyle

I love how we can make little changes, it doesn't have to be all at once but as we learn and can adjust it to our budget.

  1. Thank you for this post and the link. I agree a lot of it has to do with budget adjustments. The best advice I ever heard on changing diet was to start with the most important things first, i.e the things one's family uses most. That's how I've been doing it but it's really time to kick white sugar out of the house and switch to all natural sweeteners!

  2. Leigh, That is true and good advice......this past summer we switched to raw honey and now the raw sugar - I'm curious what others may be paying for such things, I paid $2.48 for 2.25 lbs. ....
I also bought molasses there, I didn't purchase blackstrap as I saw in one of your posts (because I don't understand the different kinds) so I decided on supreme baking molasses and it was $3.50 for 1 quart. I was pleased with my cookies now I'd like to try some homemade syrup with it.
